Hangovers – they stand toe-to-toe with texting your ex as one of the least
favored drinking-related side effects.
Like texting your ex, you can make healthy decisions throughout the night to avoid getting to that point. As choosing to delete the number from your phone is a wise decision, you can also choose what the best alcohol is, along with what you are mixing it with. If you’re looking to feel as chipper the next day as the
day you enjoyed some alcoholic beverages, here is our take on the best alcoholic drinks that don’t give you a hangover:
AVOID HANGOVERS WITH VODKA (LIGHT)
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – vodka, especially vodka light (lower carbs, calories, and alcohol content) is superior to other liquors when it comes to healthier life choices. Vodka is one of the best drinks that don’t give you hangovers.
That is because it is made by fermenting grains or vegetables with yeast. Then it is filtered again and again to make it as pure as possible. With most vodkas having 40% alcohol content, and Switch vodka light measuring at 30%, it is the least likely to give you a hangover (when enjoyed responsibly, of course).
This can be attributed to its essentially no congeners. Alas, congeners…wait, what are those!?
Quickly put, they are byproducts that are created during fermentation which can be difficult for the body to process. That’s why we think the best drinks that don’t give you hangovers are vodka drinks. It also helps if you keep sweets out of your mixed drinks.
THE BEST DRINKS THAT DON’T CAUSE HANGOVERS
So you get the point, vodka is at the top of the list for the best drinks that don’t cause hangovers. But should you mix it? And with what? Or, maybe just shoot it straight?
Before savoring that mixed drink, make sure you think about what’s going in it. Fresh fruit juices are going to include vitamins and other goodness to help your body. On the other hand, sodas just have a lot of sugary filler that will hammer through your head tomorrow.
Beware of cocktails that are mixed with multiple types of alcohol. Shaken or stirred, they’re trouble tonight and
tomorrow!
And, of course, you’ll get the most purity by drinking a quality vodka straight up, but if that’s not your thing, then just mix responsibly and don’t worry about it.
WHICH DRINK GIVES THE LEAST HANGOVER?
The worlds of alcohol and hangovers are full of urban legends, but have you heard the one about the bubbles? You know, you’re at a New Year’s Eve party or a celebration of some sort, and some helpful soul starts informing everyone that they’ll have a splitting headache tomorrow if they don’t take it easy on the champagne.
Not to side with the downers of the group, but they have a point. The carbon dioxide of these bubbly beverages helps you absorb the alcohol faster. So it’s pretty cool if you want to take an express train to a tipsy state, but that also means setting yourself up for a rough tomorrow, But seriously, that doesn’t mean you need to highlight that fact to everyone at the party…
BEST VODKA DRINKS FOR NO HANGOVER
The purity of vodka comes at a price (a relatively good one if you buy Switch). The trade-off is, well your drinks will taste better and you will have to practice a little self-control. Vodka of course can also be excellent when sipping straight. However, it has earned its place on the bartender’s arsenal, and should also be in yours after making a couple of these 5 best vodka drinks for no hangover.
BULLSHOT
This one’s very similar to a Bloody Mary, but this healthy cocktail doesn’t call for tomato juice. Instead, this health-conscious drink uses protein/vitamin-rich beef broth, which is also packed with
collagen (perfect for anti-aging):
- 2 oz. Switch Vodka Light Spirit Drink
-
4 oz. beef broth
-
2 dashes (1/5 teaspoon) Worcestershire sauce
-
2 dashes (1/5 teaspoon) tabasco sauce
-
.1/4 oz. lemon juice
-
1 pinch cayenne pepper
-
1 pinch celery salt
- 1 wedge lemon slice
Pour all of the ingredients into a shaker tin and add ice. Shake until all ingredients are combined and chilled. Strain
the Bullshot drink into an old-fashioned glass filled with fresh ice.
VODKA SODA
This one is low-calorie and easy to drink:
- 2 oz. Switch Vodka Light Spirit Drink
- Soda water
Pretty straight forward, add-in the shot, ice, soda water, which has no sugar, and you’re on your way to having a headache-free morning.
The purity and water of this classic cocktail make it a much easier way to manage your hydration while having a good ol’ time. If you’re looking for a cocktail to sip after a workout, this would be a good bet.
MARTINI
Let’s pretend we’re on Mad Men and pour one of these:
- 2 oz. Switch Vodka Light Spirit Drink
- Splash of Dry Vermouth
- Olive or lemon peel
Essentially a glorified shot that came dressed up to the party in a bigger glass. Mix them in a martini cup (who would have guessed) and drink moderately.
Want to up your game by splashing around some fancy terms? Try ordering it “wet” or “dry”. To put it simply, dry has very little vermouth, while wet will be doubling it up.
COSMOPOLITAN
If made correctly, this might actually have some real nutrients:
- 1.5 oz. Switch Vodka Light Spirit Drink
- .5 oz. Cointreau
- .75 oz. natural cranberry juice
- Lime wedge or lime peel
Add all ingredients to a shaker tin, add ice, and shake. Strain into a chilled coupe glass (no sugar rim to keep it low-calorie) using a Hawthorne strainer and serve.
The cosmo is a classic, and that means there are many recipe variations. But we’re pleased that the International Bartenders Association stands on the side of truth and justice by including vodka in their cosmopolitan recipe.
VODKA GIMLET
It’s not only delightful but also crazy simple to make:
- 1.5 oz. Switch Vodka Light Spirit Drink
- .75 oz. simple syrup (or agave)
- .75 oz. lime juice
- Lime wedge
Add all ingredients except for the lime wheel to a shaker tin with ice and… shake. Using a Hawthorne strainer… strain into a chilled coupe glass. Finally, garnish with a lime wheel.
The original gimlet calls for gin, but this is a perfect example of the people growing more wise over time. But to be safe, make sure you specify vodka with the name.
A NOTE ABOUT CAFFEINE
One final word of warning has to do with mixing with caffeine. Vodka and energy drinks make a popular mix, and depending on who you ask, it can be delicious. But putting aside taste preferences, it’s a good idea to steer clear of this combo if you’re aiming for drinks that don’t give you hangovers. Not only are energy drinks often filled with sugars (just like soft drinks), but they also prompt you to stay energized when you would otherwise get tired.
Since over drinking is always a good way to end up with a hangover, you might want to have a more accurate reading of when to call it a night.
VODKA MAKES THE BEST DRINKS THAT DON’T GIVE YOU A HANGOVER
Vodka drinkers can get a bad rap because of how easy it is to pound down one after another of these delicious drinks. They also get deemed too sweet, but we like to think you can have more than one and skip the sugar. But now that you know which drink gives the least hangover, doesn’t it make you question your drink of choice?
With Switch Vodka, the drinks are more flavorful with REAL ingredients (with no added sugars) and easier to enjoy (distilled at 30% alcohol) without the threat of a hangover (or texting an ex-lover).
After adding the drinks above to your arsenal, your friends will be asking you what type of vodka you used. Tell them you made a “Switch” to the good stuff.
Cheers!
